New Delhi, Feb 20: The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence in a rape case, allowing him temporary release until March 31, 2025, for medical treatment.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud considered Asaram’s health condition while passing the order. The court has imposed several restrictions to ensure compliance during the bail period.
Under the terms of the interim bail:
Asaram Bapu will receive medical treatment under supervision.
He is not allowed to address public gatherings or make statements.
He cannot attempt to influence witnesses or interfere in ongoing legal proceedings.
He must return to custody by March 31, 2025, unless further orders are issued.
Asaram Bapu was convicted in 2018 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for a case dating back to 2013. He has been serving his sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail and faces additional legal proceedings in other cases.
His legal representatives cited age-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and neurological problems, arguing that he required specialized medical care. The Rajasthan government opposed the bail plea, expressing concerns over security and the potential risk of witness tampering.
The court will review his health condition before the bail period expires. If necessary, further decisions will be made regarding his custody status.
