Prayagraj, February 2025 – The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has raised concerns over the water quality at the Sangam, declaring it unsafe for bathing due to high Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels. The latest CPCB report follows recent findings of faecal bacteria contamination, sparking health and environmental concerns.
According to the report, the BOD levels in the river exceed the permissible limit, indicating increased organic pollution that could pose risks to devotees and visitors during the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025. The presence of faecal coliform bacteria further highlights sewage and waste discharge issues affecting the river’s ecosystem.
Despite ongoing efforts to improve water quality through sewage treatment plants and pollution control measures, the latest findings suggest that more immediate action is needed. Experts have urged authorities to enhance monitoring, restrict waste dumping, and ensure effective treatment of pollutants before they reach the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
With millions of pilgrims gathering for the Maha Kumbh, authorities are expected to take urgent measures to address the contamination and ensure public safety. Environmentalists stress that long-term solutions are essential to preserving the sacred waters for future generations.
Stay tuned for further updates on water quality measures and their impact on the grand religious gathering.
