Ahmedabad, March 27, 2025 — The Gujarat government has identified multiple land parcels in and around Ahmedabad for potential development ahead of India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Among the sites listed for possible acquisition is land currently associated with the ashram of convicted rapist Asaram Bapu.
According to officials involved in the planning process, the land is part of a larger pool of properties being evaluated for constructing stadiums, athlete villages, and other Olympic-related infrastructure. The inclusion of the ashram land is part of a broader strategy to utilize underutilized or disputed properties for public development projects.
Authorities clarified that the process is at a preliminary stage and any acquisition will follow due legal procedures, including compensation and clearances. “We are in the process of surveying various land holdings in and around Ahmedabad that are strategically located and suitable for infrastructure development. No final decision has been taken yet,” a senior official said.
Asaram Bapu, a self-styled godman, is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of rape in 2018. His ashram properties across the country have been under scrutiny for various legal and encroachment issues over the years.
India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics has gained momentum, with Ahmedabad being projected as the central host city due to its existing infrastructure and the under-construction Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave.
If approved, this will mark the first time India hosts the Olympic Games.
