Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has attributed the recent violent clashes in Nagpur to heightened public anger against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, sparked by the release of the film 'Chhaava'. The movie, starring Vicky Kaushal, is a biopic of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, depicting the atrocities committed by Aurangzeb.
Addressing the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Fadnavis stated, "The 'Chhaava' movie has ignited people's anger against Aurangzeb. Still, everyone must keep Maharashtra peaceful." He emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, urging citizens to refrain from violence despite their sentiments.
The Chief Minister also suggested that the unrest appeared to be premeditated, noting that specific houses and establishments were targeted during the clashes. He assured that strict action would be taken against those involved in the violence, regardless of their community affiliations.
The clashes erupted following rumors that members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) had burned an effigy of Aurangzeb and his tomb during a protest demanding its removal from the nearby city of Aurangabad. The violence resulted in injuries to several individuals, including police personnel, and led authorities to impose an indefinite curfew in parts of Nagpur to restore order.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde echoed Fadnavis's sentiments, condemning the violence and labeling it a pre-planned attack aimed at disrupting communal harmony. He emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated and that those responsible would face stringent consequences.
The film 'Chhaava' has been at the center of this controversy, with leaders suggesting that its portrayal of historical events has reignited public anger towards Aurangzeb. While acknowledging the film's impact on public sentiment, officials continue to appeal for peace and adherence to the rule of law.
